Household Waste Recycling Centres in North Yorkshire: Registration, Hours and Locations
You now need to register your vehicle before using a North Yorkshire tip. Here is how registration works and where the centres serving Harrogate, Scarborough, Skipton, Ripon, Whitby, Northallerton, Selby and Malton are.
North Yorkshire Council's household waste recycling centres need free registration from Monday 27 April 2026, open to residents who pay Council Tax to the council. Centres at Harrogate, Scarborough, Skipton, Ripon, Whitby, Northallerton, Selby and Malton are open every day except Wednesdays. Check each centre's council page for hours.
Do I need to register to use the tip?
Yes. The council's household waste recycling centres page says a free registration scheme began on Monday 27 April 2026, and its registration page says that from that date you need to register to use the centres. Registration is open to residents who pay Council Tax to North Yorkshire Council. Once a vehicle is registered, anyone in your household can use it to visit.
The council describes several types of registration, chosen when you apply:
- Household registration covers cars, estate cars, people carriers, four-by-fours without cargo areas, adapted disability vehicles, motorbikes and cars towing open trailers under 1.5 metres. Each household can register up to two vehicles, and the registration is valid for three years. There is no set limit on visits, though the council says it may ask about very frequent use.
- Commercial-like vehicles (vans, pickups, flatbeds, four-by-fours with cargo areas, campervans, motorhomes and cars towing open trailers over 1.5 metres) can be registered for 12 visits in a 12-month period and must be re-registered every 12 months. The council says that if you had a commercial-like registration before, you need to register again under the new scheme.
- Temporary registration exists for delivering household waste from a North Yorkshire address for family or friends (four weeks, four visits, no charge for the service) and for hire cars (seven days, four visits, bring the hire documents).
If you move house or change vehicle you need to update your details through the link on the registration page. Commercial waste is handled separately; the council has a page on commercial waste disposal and charges.
Which tip serves my town?
The council's list of centres includes the following for the eight towns this site covers. Addresses and opening patterns are as published on each centre's own council page.
- Harrogate. Two centres are listed: Harrogate, Wetherby Road, HG3 1DE (council page), and West Harrogate, Penny Pot Lane, HG3 2SN (council page).
- Scarborough. Seamer Carr, Dunslow Road, Eastfield, YO12 4QA (council page). The council warns that this postcode will not take you to the centre by sat-nav; follow the signs to the Scarborough Resource Recovery Centre instead.
- Skipton. Harrogate Road, BD23 6AB (council page).
- Ripon. Dallamires Crescent, Dallamires Lane, HG4 1TT (council page).
- Whitby. Discovery Way, Whitby Industrial Estate, YO22 4PZ (council page).
- Northallerton. Yafforth Road, DL7 0LG (council page).
- Selby. Canal Road, YO8 8AG (council page).
- Malton. The Malton and Norton centre, Pasture Lane, YO17 6BT (council page).
The council's full list also includes other sites in the county, such as Burniston (near Scarborough), Thornton-le-Dale, Wombleton, Tadcaster, Settle and mobile centres.
When are the tips open?
For each of the sites above, the council's page says the centre is open every day except Wednesdays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. The published hours are 8.30am to 5pm from April to September and 8.30am to 4pm from October to March. As this guide was checked in October, the shorter winter hours currently apply. The Ripon, Selby, Skipton, Whitby, Northallerton and West Harrogate pages ask you to allow enough time to unload before the site closes. Check the centre's own page before a long journey, as hours can change.
What does it cost?
Most household waste is free. The council's centre pages say there are charges for all vehicle tyres and some commercial waste. At Skipton and Northallerton the pages also say all residents are charged for hardcore, rubble, plasterboard and tyres. At the other sites checked, DIY waste is free but limited: once a week you can bring either a single item no larger than 2000mm by 750mm by 700mm or less than 100 litres of DIY waste (about two 50-litre bags), and extra items in a visit are chargeable by card. The council's "waste we make a charge for" page has the current charges, so check it rather than relying on a figure here.
Bulky waste collections
If you cannot take large items to the tip, the council's bulky waste page says it offers a paid collection service in most parts of North Yorkshire. It lists items it collects, such as beds, sofas, mattresses, fridges, washing machines and carpets, and items it does not, including asbestos, builder's waste, tyres, fixtures and fittings, pianos and radiators. As published, the minimum charge is £37 for up to two items, and you could get money off if you receive a means-tested council tax reduction. You can cancel online with two clear working days' notice.
Where to check
Everything above comes from North Yorkshire Council. Registration, charges and hours can change, so use the centre list and the registration page as the final word.
