Which bus companies run services in and between Harrogate, Scarborough, Skipton, Ripon, Whitby, Northallerton, Selby and Malton, and where to find timetables and concessionary passes.

There is no single North Yorkshire bus company, and North Yorkshire Council does not run most services. Harrogate Bus Company serves Harrogate, Ripon and Skipton routes, Coastliner links Malton, Whitby and Scarborough, and East Yorkshire runs Scarborough locals and park and ride. Who runs the buses?

There is no single North Yorkshire bus company. North Yorkshire Council does not run most services; its public transport pages bring together bus timetables, bus service changes, real time information, community transport, demand responsive transport for areas without regular buses, and bus stations, stops and shelters (including Skipton Bus Station). The council's bus operators list names the many operators, including small local firms, with contact details and the services each runs.

For the larger towns, these are the operators we could confirm from their own websites. Routes and timetables change, and the operators post temporary diversions as service updates; always check the operator's site or the Transdev Go app before travelling.

Harrogate, Ripon and Skipton: Harrogate Bus Company

The Harrogate Bus Company website (part of Transdev Blazefield) lists its network and live service updates. At the time of writing it showed, among others:

  • 36: Ripon to Harrogate and Leeds via Harewood. A service update covered a temporary stop on Harrogate Road because of roadworks.
  • 59: Harrogate to Skipton via Blubberhouses. An update said the bus cannot serve the St Andrews Church stop until further notice because of A59 roadworks.
  • 24: Harrogate to Pateley Bridge via Hampsthwaite and Darley.
  • 21: Knaresborough to Boroughbridge and Roecliffe via Flaxby and Staveley.
  • 7: Harrogate to Wetherby and Leeds, with evening diversions in Leeds city centre because of road closures.
  • 1A, 1B and 1C: Harrogate to Knaresborough estates.
  • Flyer A2: Bradford to Leeds Bradford Airport and Harrogate.
  • DalesBus 74: York to Harrogate, Ilkley and Grassington via Knaresborough and Otley.

So for Ripon, the 36 is the route to Harrogate. For Skipton to Harrogate, the 59. The site also lists school-day services.

Malton, Whitby and Scarborough: Coastliner

The Transdev York and Coastliner site lists Coastliner 840 and 843 as Leeds to York, Malton, Whitby and Scarborough via Tadcaster and Thornton Dale. Its service updates at the time of writing included a closure on Church Street in Norton affecting the 843 between Malton and Scarborough (21 September to 11 October 2026) and delays near Kirby Misperton roundabout and Habton Bridge. The same network lists local services around York and Thirsk and the Easingwold area, plus MoorsBus and DalesBus routes.

Scarborough: East Yorkshire

East Yorkshire Buses groups its services in the area as "Scarborough Locals" and the Coaster, which it describes as running between Scarborough and Bridlington via Primrose Valley and Filey. East Yorkshire also operates the two Scarborough park and ride routes, services 64 (Seamer Road) and 165 (Filey Road), described on the council's park and ride page; the council says those buses run every 20 minutes during the season, which currently runs to 1 November 2026.

Northallerton and Selby

For services in Northallerton and Selby, use the council's bus timetables page and the operator list, which lets you find the services and operators that serve a stop or route, and the real time information pages.

Bus passes

The council's bus and travel passes page explains the older person's bus pass, which it says gives people of pensionable age free off-peak travel on local bus services anywhere in England, and the disabled person's bus pass. It links to help applying (some libraries offer free one-to-one support), where and when you can use a pass, and what to do if a pass is lost or stolen.

Real-time and journey planning

The council has a page on real time bus information. The operators publish their own timetables, and the Transdev group (Harrogate Bus Company and Coastliner) has the Transdev Go app for tickets and journey planning.
