How it works

North Yorkshire Council runs the registration service. Its birth and death pages say you book appointments online, and its registration offices page lists the offices. It covers North Yorkshire only: for births the council says City of York is not classed as part of North Yorkshire, and it points to City of York Council, Bradford, Leeds and other neighbouring services for babies born outside the county.

Registering a birth

The council's page says the birth should be registered within 42 days, in the district where your baby was born, and that if the baby was born in North Yorkshire you can register at any North Yorkshire registration office. It lists exceptions: a baby born at York hospital can be registered at the Malton or Selby offices with a certificate at the appointment, and a baby born at Airedale Hospital can be registered at Skipton. For a baby born outside the county you can register by declaration, but the certificate is posted later.

Registering a death

The council's page says all deaths must be registered in person, and you should book within five days of being told by the medical examiner that the medical certificate has been sent to the council. It says the appointment takes about 50 minutes, and that a death in North Yorkshire can be registered at any registration office in the county, with certificates handed over at the appointment. Where the coroner is investigating, the timescale can be extended.

Giving notice of marriage or civil partnership

The council's notice page says notice must be given at least 29 days before the ceremony, with the ceremony within 12 months, and that if you live in North Yorkshire you can give notice at any of its registration offices. If you must give notice at a designated register office, it names Harrogate, Northallerton, Scarborough, Skipton and Selby. It lists the documents to bring.
