Where each of the eight main towns does its shopping, which markets run on which days, and what the councils and visitor groups say about parking and toilets.

Market days differ by town, per North Yorkshire Council: Skipton Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; Ripon Thursday and Saturday; Northallerton Wednesday and Saturday; Selby Monday; Malton Saturday; Scarborough's Market Hall and Vaults Monday to Saturday; Whitby four days a week; and Harrogate's farmers' market the second Thursday monthly. How to use this guide

North Yorkshire Council's markets directory lists market days by former district area. We have used those pages for the days below and added what each town's own site says. We do not rank or review shops. Market days change with bank holidays and weather, so check before travelling. For parking, see our parking guide; for events, our markets and events guide.

Harrogate

The Victoria Shopping Centre publishes Monday to Saturday 9am to 6pm and Sunday 10am to 4.30pm; its site shows a 2016 copyright, so confirm before you go. Harrogate BID says it works to make the town centre vibrant, safe and welcoming. The council says Harrogate farmers' market takes place on the second Thursday of every month. The council's car park directory lists Jubilee multi-storey car park, which its page says is ticketless, open Sunday to Wednesday 7am to 11pm and Thursday to Saturday 7am to 11:59pm, and locked overnight.

Scarborough

The council says Scarborough Market Hall and Vaults is open Monday to Saturday from 8am until 5pm. For the Brunswick shopping centre, check the centre directly.

Skipton

Skipton Town Council's market page says the High Street market is open every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday through the year, with occasional extra days near Christmas, generally 9am to 4.30pm, on the cobbled setts alongside the High Street shops. It says some stalls open earlier and that individual traders decide whether to attend. The council also lists a Skipton artisan market on the first Sunday of the month.

Ripon

North Yorkshire Council says Ripon market is every Thursday from 7:30am to 3pm and every Saturday from 7:30am to 2pm. Ripon BID describes a not-for-profit, business-led organisation for the Ripon city region. The council's Market Place car park page gives a 1 hour maximum stay and says parking is free for motorcycles and disabled users; its directory lists toilets at the Ripon bus station on Victoria Grove.

Whitby

The council says Whitby market is held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout the year, subject to weather. VisitWhitby.com describes boutique shops, quirky streets and Whitby jet jewellery.

Northallerton

The council says Northallerton market is held every Wednesday and Saturday. Northallerton Town Council's website says public toilets at the rear of Northallerton Town Hall are open 9am to 3pm Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday and 8am to 4pm Wednesday and Saturday. The council's Applegarth short stay car park page says it is ticketless, with charges from 8am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, free outside those hours and all day Sunday, and the first hour free via the green button.

Selby

The council says Selby market is held on a Monday and the Selby farmers' market on the third Saturday of every month. Its toilets directory lists toilets at Back Micklegate car park, Selby.

Malton

The council says Malton market operates every Saturday, with livestock markets on Tuesday and Friday. Visit Malton describes the Market Place as the centre of town with independent shops, cafes and restaurants, and Talbot Yard as a food court with six artisan producers. Its plan your visit page says two hours free parking in the central Market Place, Chancery Lane and Shambles car park and weekends at Navigation Wharf, with some restrictions on market days, and long stay parking at Wentworth Street and Water Lane.
